India Post Open-Sources DIGIPIN, Digital Address System with New Web Portals for PIN Code Access

For modernising India’s addressing infrastructure, the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, has launched two digital platforms — Know Your DIGIPIN and Know Your PIN Code — aimed at improving location accuracy, public service delivery, and emergency response.

Developed under the National Geospatial Policy 2022, the DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) system is now open source, with its full technical documentation and source code available on GitHub.

DIGIPIN is a grid-based, geo-coded, and interoperable digital address system created by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO.

Designed to serve as a backbone for Address-as-a-Service (AaaS), DIGIPIN enables accurate digital location mapping for users, businesses, and government agencies.

Through the Know Your DIGIPIN portal, users can retrieve their DIGIPIN using geolocation and input latitude and longitude to find matching DIGIPINs and vice versa.

The system is expected to simplify last-mile delivery, especially in rural areas, and improve response time in emergencies.

Already reviewed and adopted by the Thematic Working Group on Address under the National Geospatial Policy, DIGIPIN is now available for integration by various ministries, state governments, and institutions.

In parallel, the Know Your PIN Code platform enhances the traditional six-digit postal code system, introduced in 1972, by using GNSS-based geofencing data.

Following a nationwide geo-referencing exercise, the platform allows users to identify the correct PIN Code based on their location.

The Department has also uploaded the geo-fenced PIN Code dataset on the Open Government Data Platform under the title All India PIN Code Boundary geo-json.

Secretary of the Department of Posts, Ms. Vandita Kaul, said, “The launch of these two applications reflects our Government’s unwavering commitment to digital transformation and precision governance. DIGIPIN, in particular, will redefine how we perceive addresses, ensuring that every citizen, even in the remotest part of the country, is digitally locatable and serviceable.”

These efforts position the Department of Posts as a key player in building India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).
