India ranks 77th in Henley Passport Index 2025, offers visa-free access to 59 countries – Investing Abroad News
In the realm of global travel, the power of a passport often determines the freedom of movement a citizen enjoys across borders. The Henley Passport Index 2025, provides a comprehensive snapshot of global mobility, ranking countries based on the number of destinations their passport holders can access without a prior visa.
This year, Singapore has once again secured the top spot as the most powerful passport in the world, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 193 countries. Close behind are Japan and South Korea, both tied at second place with 190 visa-free destinations. Several European nations, including France, Germany, and Italy, also feature prominently among the top five ranks.
Europe, Asia Dominate the Top of the Passport Index
European and Asian countries continue to lead in passport power due to strong international ties and stable diplomatic relationships. Countries like Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain share the third rank, each granting access to 189 countries. These passports are prized not just for ease of travel, but also for the diplomatic goodwill they signify.
Rounding off the top 10 are traditional travel giants such as United Kingdom (186 countries), Australia (185), and the United States, which has slipped to 10th place with 182 visa-free destinations, shared with Iceland and Lithuania.
India Ranks 77th; Afghanistan Remains the Least Powerful
India holds the 77th position in the 2025 index, allowing its citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 59 countries. While this represents a modest level of global mobility, it also highlights the need for improved international diplomatic outreach and agreements to enhance travel freedom for Indian passport holders.
At the bottom of the index are countries with the least travel access. Afghanistan ranks 99th, offering access to just 25 countries. Other low-ranking countries include Syria (27 countries), Iraq (30), Pakistan (32), and Bangladesh (39), underscoring the impact of political instability and limited diplomatic reach on global mobility.
The Henley Passport Index is compiled using data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) and is widely regarded as the most reliable indicator of passport strength globally.
