In a landmark move bridging ancient wisdom and modern regulation, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Ayush, has released a definitive list of “Ayurveda Aahara” products under Category A. This initiative brings India’s time-honoured Ayurvedic food practices into the mainstream, with a focus on promoting preventive health, sustainability, and balanced living.

The newly released list comprises food formulations drawn directly from classical Ayurvedic texts mentioned in Schedule A of the 2022 Ayurveda Aahara Regulations. These foods, now officially recognised under Category A, follow time-tested recipes, ingredients, and preparation methods—marking a crucial step toward integrating Ayurveda into daily diets with greater clarity and confidence.

“Ayurveda Aahara is more than just food—it’s a lifestyle aligned with nature,” said Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav. “In today’s fast-paced world, adopting Ayurveda Aahara is a meaningful step toward preventive healthcare and sustainable living.”

To ensure transparency and adaptability, FSSAI has established a mechanism for food businesses to propose the inclusion of additional items into the Ayurveda Aahara category. These proposals must be backed by references from authoritative texts already listed under the regulations.

This development is a boon for Food Business Operators (FBOs), who now have a credible and regulatory framework to manufacture Ayurveda-based nutritional products. Simultaneously, it enhances consumer trust in traditional wellness foods by providing a validated, government-approved list of authentic Ayurvedic preparations.

Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, remarked, “This initiative empowers the food industry with much-needed clarity and aligns India’s traditional knowledge with modern regulatory standards.”

Scientific Validation with Ancient Roots

The list was developed with the guidance of the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), which undertook the task of curating and decoding traditional formulations. Prof. Sanjeev Sharma, Vice-Chancellor of NIA, highlighted that the institute worked meticulously to ensure each product’s scientific and textual validation. “This is a major step toward mainstreaming classical Ayurvedic foods in a regulated environment,” he said.

These foods—whether they be herbal-infused drinks, spice-based formulations, or balanced meals designed for seasonal harmony—are not just nostalgic reminders of the past. They offer proven benefits for digestion, immunity, and overall well-being.

At the 2023 inauguration of World Food India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had underlined the global potential of India’s traditional dietary systems. “Just like International Yoga Day took Yoga across the world, Ayurveda Aahara and millets too will reach every corner of the globe,” he had said.

Indeed, Ayurveda Aahara is poised to become India’s next global wellness offering—promoting not just health, but cultural sustainability through diet.

As people increasingly seek holistic and preventive healthcare, Ayurveda Aahara stands out as a grounded, well-documented alternative. These products align with seasonal cycles, local ingredients, and therapeutic herbs—encouraging mindful eating and a deeper connection with nature.

Whether you’re a health-conscious millennial, a parent seeking better nutrition for your family, or someone aiming to simplify your meals while enhancing immunity, Ayurveda Aahara offers an easy, authentic way to embrace well-being.
