India targets 89 Mtoe reduction in energy consumption by 2030, ET EnergyWorld
With a target to reduce energy consumption by 89 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) by 2030, the central government has prepared a detailed plan across key sectors of the economy, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik informed the Parliament on Thursday.
To address the nation’s burgeoning cooling demand while minimising environmental impact, it is essential to focus on sustainable cooling.
Industry, buildings (including appliances) and transport remain the key sectors for which a detailed plan has been developed to reduce energy consumption, the minister said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
Government initiatives
Key initiatives which have been introduced by the government include the Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code (ECSBC) for commercial structures and the Eco Niwas Samhita (ENS) for residential buildings. These codes mandate energy-efficient best practices.
The air-conditioners, ceiling fans and refrigerators have also been brought under mandatory compliance of the Standard and Labelling programme to ensure energy efficiency, the minister noted.
Besides that, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has also launched the India Cooling Action Plan that provides an overarching framework to manage the rising cooling demand sustainably.
