He also said that a 1,200-horsepower hydrogen train is under development, with the aim of positioning India among the countries progressing in hydrogen-powered train systems.
Pilot projects and future plans
In 2023, Vaishnaw told the Rajya Sabha that Indian Railways had planned to run 35 hydrogen trains under the “Hydrogen for Heritage” programme. Each train is expected to cost ₹80 crore, with an additional ₹70 crore per route for ground infrastructure. The initiative targets heritage and hill routes.Separately, Indian Railways has awarded a pilot project to retrofit an existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake with a hydrogen fuel cell. The project, valued at ₹111.83 crore, includes ground infrastructure and is planned for the Jind–Sonipat section of Northern Railway.
The operational cost of hydrogen-powered trains is yet to be established within the Indian Railways context. Authorities estimate that initial running costs may be higher but are expected to decline as the number of trains increases. Officials note that hydrogen, as a fuel, contributes to zero-emission goals and clean energy efforts.
