Lunar Eclipse September 7–8 2025:On the night of September 7th bleeding into the 8th, 2025, we’re getting a front-row seat to a total lunar eclipse. People call it a “Blood Moon” because the moon turns this wild, rusty red not your average full moon, trust me. It is a total eclipse of the moon whereby the earth’s shadow completely covers the lunar surface as the earth is exactly between the sun and the moon. Rather than going completely dark, the moon adopts very deep reddish and coppery colors, which is the reason why it is called the Blood Moon, the process is called Rayleigh scattering, where the earth’s atmosphere absorbs the shorter blue wavelengths and refracts the longer red wavelengths to the Moon’s surface. The date is actually from the 7th to the 8th of September 2025.

Cultural Insight: Sutak, Traditions, and Beliefs
In India, a Sutak period precedes eclipses, it is considered spiritually sensitive, so people avoid cooking, eating, and doing any religious activities during that time. Today, Sutak started between 12:57 PM to 12:59 PM IST.
The traditional advice is:
- Avoid new travel or ventures.
- Only prepare sattvic (light vegetarian) food typically with Tulsi (holy basil) for purification.
- Mantras chanting, ritual bath taking before and after.
- Use Tulsi in food or water to keep off negative energy.
- Pregnant women are advised to stay indoors to be on the safe side.
These rituals combine cultural wisdom and spiritual mindfulness, even though there is no scientific proof that lunar eclipses cause health or safety risks.
