India to Help Belize Launch Fruit Juice Plant Through Agro Grant

The Government of Belize is getting support from India to develop the country’s agro processing sector. This week, a high-level delegation from delegation from NABCONS, the consulting arm of India’s National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, visited Belize on a three-day tour. They visited and met with personnel at the government’s Central Farm facility and the Belize Marketing Development Corporation. The end goal is to establish an end-to-end fruit juice production line, funded by the Government of India’s SME Machinery Grant initiative. This project aims to transform how Belize processes its abundant seasonal fruits. Ervin Gentle, Coordinator for the Agroprocessing Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, said that the facility will process, store, and market fresh fruits from local farmers.

Elvin Gentle, Coordinator, Agro processing Unit, MAFSE: “The three day tour focused on visiting the Central Farm facility where the incubation of product creation is held. From there we traveled to Orange Walk where we visited the Belize Marketing Development Corporation’s facility where the Indian government is planning to support the Government of Belize with the establishment of an end to end processing line for fruits, seasonal fruits mainly dragonfruit, soursop, passion fruit. This would see where farmers would be able to deliver their product to this facility it would be processed, preserved and stored and marketed by the marketing board and the farmers would be able to generate income from this venture. The Indian government will help the participants by offering capacity building and also servicing and maintenance of these equipment for up to five years. The sum of this project totaled $1.9 million Belize dollars.”

The facility will also extract pulp from the fruits, which can then be used to make value-added products such as jams, jellies, sauces, and ice cream.
