Indian student’s F-1 visa answers at Delhi embassy go viral, Internet takes notes – Investing Abroad News

An Indian student who recently appeared for his F-1 visa interview and got an approval stamp on his passport has shared all the questions and answers from his 4-minute interaction online, and the Internet is taking notes, quite literally. Those eyeing the United States for further studies are lapping up every detail. The student appeared for his interview at the US Embassy in New Delhi on June 3. He applied for an MS in Computer Science at Northeastern University. His visa was approved by a consular officer in her 40s at Counter No 17.

Redditor applied for MS at Northeastern University

Reddit user “OpportunityBudget182” shared the full transcript of his visa interview, and people are all ears. Among the questions he was asked was about his choice of campus within Northeastern University. “But why Seattle and not Boston?” the visa officer inquired.

The Redditor explained that although the “course curriculum is the same across all campuses, and the Seattle campus has a lower student-to-faculty ratio”. When the officer asked why that mattered, the student replied, “I believe it allows more interaction with professors and leads to better learning outcomes.”

Student loan, scholarship and interest rate

The next part of the visa interview focused on how the student planned to finance his education. “I see you took an education loan of $100,000 along with a $6,000 scholarship. Are you completely reliant on that?” asked the visa officer.

The student responded that he was not completely reliant on the loan, explaining, “My father is the co-sponsor. He has strong liquid assets, which is why I qualified for such a large loan from SBI.”

After learning about the father’s role as co-sponsor, the officer dug deeper, asking about the interest rate and why the student chose not to list his father’s savings as the primary financial support.

“It was a financial decision. In case I’m unable to repay, he has enough funds and steady income to cover the entire loan amount if needed,” he answered, before adding that the SBI loan carries an interest rate of 9.5 per cent.

Family members visited US on tourist visa

The visa officer then asked about any family members who had previously visited the US, including their professions. “Have any of your relatives been to the US before?” the visa officer asked, along with their profession.

The Redditor answered, “Yes, my paternal uncle and aunt have visited the US twice on a tourist visa. My paternal uncle works in the public sector; my aunt is a homemaker.”

The student also told the visa officer that his father is a General Manager at a Fortune 500 company.

Reddit praises him for his ‘colourful’ answers

While reacting to the Reddit post, one user lauded the student’s “colourful” replies, which didn’t sound “mechanical” or “scripted”. Another responded, “Absolute crisp answers! Love it. This is what I call a hearty conversation.”

A few who appeared for the visa interview on the same day at the same counter at the Delhi embassy said that they also got their F-1 student visas approved.

“I was there on 4th June, that American lady at counter 17 in her 40s is really, really nice, she is so cool man, she approved mine too,” said one user. Another chimed in, “I also got my visa approved today at the US Embassy at around the same time. We must have seen each other!”

A third joined, “I just got my F1 visa approved a few days ago at the same counter (same lady). My experience was smooth as well. She asked me which colleges I applied to. Where I got accepted. My CGPA. Then my financials. I own properties in Delhi in the tune of X million dollars, so I was approved instantly. The key point is if your financials are strong, you won’t have a tough time getting through!”

The original poster agreed, noting that he felt “lucky” to be assigned to Counter 17. “Had it been that young guy on counter 15 visa definitely would have been rejected; he asked too many questions and was nearly rejecting every student,” he claimed.

One even asked which state-run bank offered him a massive loan at such low interest rates, adding that one lakh USD “seems quite excessive”.

“I just took it for the sake of it. Only gonna use 40K USD for tuition because I got a 40% scholarship on 60K USD tuition. Rest for living, I’ll use my parents’ savings. The remaining 60K USD loan amount is just in case of an emergency. Loan instalments would only be on the utilised amount, not the sanctioned one. SBI is safe and trustworthy, unlike third-party lenders with extremely high interest rates and changing terms and conditions. Everyone is thinking I’m gonna use 100K lol I’m not cuz yeah it’s huge af money to pay back even for US job standards ik that. It’s just for safety and to show 100K amount is purely to cover tuition and living during MS, nowhere else it’s gonna be used because it’s an educational loan, not personal savings,” the student explained the logic behind it.
