India’s AI dream begins in schools with the SOAR programme

In a world where science and technology have taken a leap of rapid enhancement and breakthrough, a rising India has refused to simply ponder upon it: rather, the nation has always believed in bridging its diverse population on a common ground. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) in order to line up the country’s education system with the rapidly sprouting technical advancements, has introduced the SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness) Programme- a national initiative which aims to introduce and bolster the concept of ‘AI Literacy’ to students from Class 6-12 and teachers. This programme is planned for creating a secure, AI-driven future for the Indian youth, thus fostering critical and analytical thinking. This not only engages them in eradicating the digital divide but also works hand in hand for the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision through insightful learning.

Unveiled in 2025, SOAR is not just another curriculum update- it is a revolutionary attempt to incorporate AI education into the mainstream syllabus. The curriculum, which focuses on interactive, project-based learning to promote creativity, critical thinking, and ethical awareness in AI applications, is intended for students across state boards, CBSE, and Kendriya Vidyalaya schools.

Why SOAR, why now?

India’s tech industry, already a global platform of scientific curiosities and technological operations, is undergoing a seismic metamorphosis as AI continues to strive valiantly across sectors – from healthcare and agriculture to education and finance. However, the skills gap existing is a major concern. A report says that by 2030, more than half of India’s workers will need to learn more about AI and digital technologies.

By introducing AI education, SOAR aims to construct a solid foundation among students, making sure that they become active participants in creating and fostering digital content rather than being merely passive users.

What is SOAR all about?

For the purpose of equipping students with a practical and experiential learning experience, SOAR introduces them to basic AI concepts like machine learning, natural language processing and neural networks through storytelling, gamified lessons and case studies. At an advanced level, hands-on training in coding, data analysis and even chatbot development would be provided through interactive workshops. Most importantly, it makes students realise ethical considerations – they learn not only about how AI works, but how it should be utilised for the betterment of oneself and the nation. Hence, the establishment of AI laboratories and clubs is the need of the hour.

The programme comes with three 15-hour modules titled AI to be Aware, AI to Acquire, and AI to Aspire for students. ‘AI for Educators’- a 45-hour professional learning module has been designed in order to endow educators with the knowledge and capabilities required for ushering students through their AI learning journey.

The MSDE has secured funding of a whopping $14.4 million through a Skill Impact Bond (SIB), an innovative financing tool created with the responsibility of delivering evidence-based training with multi-stakeholder buy-in and quantifiable outcomes.

Alongside SOAR, came to light ‘KaushalVerse’, a business digital portal launched by the Government of India that simplifies skill-based schooling, testing and communication. Students across all institutions and regions will now have access to free learning materials and examine their own progress, strengthening SOAR in the meantime.

The Skill India, accompanied by ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’, fosters hope in empowering India as a technologically developed nation in the near future, with the SOAR centring the Indian youth in future global innovations and derivatives.

SOAR has already been piloted in over 10,000 institutions across the country, displaying sheer positive results with students showing keen interest in learning about AI. The government aims to expand this to other institutions across the country by 2027.
