India’s Busiest Flight Route Revealed – And It’s Not What You Think! | India News

Mumbai: India has been ranked as the fifth largest aviation market in the world, with the handling capacity of 241 million passengers in 2024, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Interestingly, the Mumbai–Delhi route was the 7th busiest air route globally, with 5.9 million people flying between the two cities last year.

The annual World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) by IATA covered data from around 350 global airlines for ananlysis. The report claims that India’s air traffic grew by 11.1% as compared to 2023, putting it ahead of countries like Japan (205 million passengers).

1. USA – 876 million passengers

2. China – 741 million

3. UK – 261 million

4. Spain – 241 million

5. India – 241 million

India shares the 4th spot with Spain in terms of passenger numbers.

Busiest Flight Routes

As per the report, Mumbai-Delhi ranked 7th among the top 10 routes, showing just how important this domestic link is for India’s air network. Most of the world’s busiest routes were in Asia-Pacific. The Jeju-Seoul (South Korea) route was the busiest globally with 13.2 million passengers.

Premium air travel (business/first class grew by 11.8% globally.

Asia-Pacific had the highest growth in overall passenger numbers.
