India is on the cusp of a coffee boom, with consumption expected to double over the next 5-10 years as changing beverage habits take hold faster than in developed markets, according to Raja Chakraborty, CMO, Continental Coffee Limited (CCL). “We believe in next 5-10 years coffee consumption will double in India because the younger generation will adopt coffee as the go to beverage.”

To meet growing demand, CCL has doubled its production capacity across India and Vietnam and anticipates 100 per cent capacity utilisation by FY29, Praveen Jaipuriar, CEO of Continental Coffee Ltd (CCL) shared plans and noted that the company will explore plans for further expansion as it gets closer to full utilisation. “We are also open to exploring strategic tie-ups with players seeking to outsource operations from their under-utilised units,” said Jaipuriar. The company currently operates with a total capacity of over 75,000 million tonnes (mt) per year across Switzerland, Vietnam, and India.

While 70 per cent of its domestic business comes from branded business, 30 per cent comes from the private labelling & bulk coffee business. CCL expects the branded sales contribution to further expand in the coming years.

West Asia, Asia lead exports

Export markets remain crucial for CCL, with 35-40 per cent of shipments going to Asia, another 35-40 per cent to Europe (including Russia and the CIS), and about 10 per cent to the American market. The company has minimal business in Australia. West Asia and Asia, Jaipuriar said, are emerging as “the most aspirational coffee markets globally”, driving the highest growth in both in-home and out-of-home consumption.

Domestically, the sachet segment still accounts for around 70 per cent of India’s coffee market. Chakraborty told businessline that sachets will continue to grow for some time. “At CCL, we are investing in expanding the penetration of small packs through focused micro-marketing activities. We are also working on enhancing the reach of niche segments through small packs — such as premixes. In the next 5-10 years, coffee consumption in India will double, led by the younger generation adopting coffee as their go-to beverage,” said Chakraborty.
