India’s farmstay market poised to reach Rs 63,000 crore by 2029

City life is fast, crowded, and tiring — and more Indians are beginning to feel it. As traffic jams, pollution, and hectic routines take a toll on daily life, a growing number of people are turning towards peaceful living spaces surrounded by greenery. This shift is giving a big boost to India’s organised farmstay market.

MARKET TO GROW FOURFOLD IN FOUR YEARS

According to a new study by Axon Developers, India’s organised farmstay market is currently valued at Rs 16,100 crore in 2025 and is expected to cross Rs 63,000 crore by 2029. This marks a strong annual growth rate of nearly 41%.

At present, there are around 17,700 farmstay units spread across 150-plus projects in the country. The number is projected to rise to 46,000 units by 2029, covering an estimated 37,050 acres, up from the current 11,140 acres.

SOUTH AND WEST LEAD THE WAY

Half of India’s organised farmstays are located in southern India, followed by the western region, which contributes around 29% to the market. The remaining share comes from the northern and eastern parts of the country, the report said.

“Urban fatigue is on the rise. People are seeking wellness, cleaner surroundings, and more space to breathe. Farmstays offer all of that,” said Ankit Kansal, Managing Director, Axon Developers.

A SHIFT TOWARDS WELLNESS AND MINDFUL LIVING

City life is becoming increasingly stressful, and the growing interest in farmstays reflects a desire for a healthier lifestyle. Many people now prefer to live closer to nature, surrounded by greenery and peace.

Farmstays are also becoming popular for short getaways, family vacations, and corporate retreats. For some, the appeal goes beyond leisure — they are choosing to move permanently to managed farmstays, using them as their primary homes.

The rise of remote and hybrid working has made this shift easier. With good internet and connectivity, many professionals now find it practical to live, work, and relax in scenic countryside locations.

POPULAR FARMSTAY HOTSPOTS

Several farmstay destinations have emerged near major Indian cities, offering both comfort and convenience.

Areas like Nandi Hills (near Bengaluru), Panvel, Karjat, Alibaug (near Mumbai), NH-8, and Naugaon (near NCR) are seeing rising demand for managed farmstay projects.

A NEW ASSET CLASS

Beyond lifestyle benefits, farmstays are also attracting investors. Many owners now rent out their properties for weekend stays, staycations, and corporate events, earning regular income.

With wellness tourism, eco-conscious living, and flexible work trends all on the rise, India’s organised farmstay market seems set for a long and steady journey of growth — one that brings people closer to nature and away from city noise.
