India’s First Intercity Electric Coach Service Turns 3
If you enjoy frequent road trips and love exploring new places but prefer not to drive yourself, chances are you’ve considered taking the bus. Now, India’s first intercity electric coach service, NueGo, offers you the comfort and business-class experience you’d want while travelling between states.
It is GreenCell Mobility that owns the intercity electric bus brand NueGo, purchases buses from OHM Global Mobility, a division of Ashok Leyland. NueGo isn’t just any bus, it’s part of India’s largest electric intercity bus fleet, and this month, NueGo is celebrating three successful years of changing the way India travels.
In just 36 months, NueGo’s 300+ electric buses have rolled across 120+ cities, clocking over 2,765 million kilometres, making the interstate travel easy. All those trips avoided 261 million kilograms of CO₂ emissions.
However, NueGo aims to make travel safer and more inclusive in addition to being environmentally friendly. The company has included safety into every journey, from high-definition CCTV cameras and a 24-hour women’s hotline to GPS tracking and an AI-powered driver monitoring system. Midway stops are maintained tidy and under observation, and female passengers can select “Pink Seats” to seat adjacent to other female passengers. In order to provide a safe and friendly travel environment, the company also hires women and transgender employees in a variety of positions, such as coach captains and cabin hosts.
They’ve even made history by launching India’s first all-women intercity bus service, where both the passengers and the crew are women. To keep the buses running smoothly, NueGo has installed 100+ high-power superchargers across the routes that can fully charge a bus in just two hours. That means less downtime, more green kilometres and the passengers get some time outside the vehicle.
Devndra Chawla, MD & CEO of GreenCell Mobility & NueGo, said, “Three years ago, we set out to prove that clean, safe, and inclusive intercity travel wasn’t a distant dream—it could be today’s reality. Every kilometre we drive without emissions is a kilometre towards a greener India, and every woman who travels with confidence is a step towards a more inclusive society. Our next chapter is about scaling this vision so that sustainable and safe travel becomes the norm, not the exception, across every city and town in the country.”
