INDUSLAW becomes the first Indian law firm to join global legal giant CMS
In a significant move, INDUSLAW has become India’s first law firm to become an exclusive member of CMS—a confederation of international law firms. The timing of such a move is critical, with India on the cusp of opening doors for foreign law firms and lawyers to offer services in India.
CMS boasts of over 6800 lawyers operating across 45 countries. INDUSLAW will complete the onboarding by the end of 2025.
With this move, INDUSLAW will be eyeing CMS’s multinational clients that are eyeing opportunities in India. In its press release, INDUSLAW said, “India has become the world’s fourth-largest economy and is projected to become the third-largest by 2027. Its increasingly globalised economy creates a growing need for international legal advisers with deep local insight.”
Executive Partner at CMS, Duncan Weston said, “With India’s economy being increasingly integrated into the global economic system, the need for agile, forward-thinking legal advisers capable of bridging local and international jurisdictions has never been more critical.
With INDUSLAW now a CMS member firm, we can offer clients a coordinated, full-service legal platform in India, one of the fastest-growing and most strategically important markets in the world.”
Meanwhile, in a joint statement, INDUSLAW’s Founding Partners, Avimukt Dar, Gaurav Dani, Kartik Ganapathy and Suneeth Katark added, “While we will continue on our journey as a leading full-service Indian law firm delivering exceptional client service and thought leadership, we now also enjoy the support of CMS to bring to the table the ability to offer a coordinated global offer.”
This announcement comes just days after the Bar Council of India notified rules on May 13 for the registration and regulation of foreign lawyers and law firms in India.
The revised rules permit foreign lawyers and firms to provide advisory services in areas of cross-border transactions and international arbitration.
The rules, however, bar foreign lawyers or firms from participating in litigation or advising on matters of Indian law.
