Inline hockey team gears up for debut at World Games   – New Era

Namibia’s inline hockey team is gearing up to compete at this year’s 12th World Games, which will be held in China this month from 7 to 11 August.

The competition will take place in Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province.

Competing countries are host nation China, France, the Czech Republic, Italy, the United States of America, China Taipei, Argentina and Namibia, who will battle it out for top honours.

Namibia will commence the campaign with a tight contest against Chinese Taipei on Thursday before they take on the People’s Republic of China the following day.  Their last matchup will be against the USA on Saturday.

Only the top seven-ranked teams in the world, along with the host nation, qualify to participate in the World Games.  These Games, held every four years, are considered the Olympics of Roller Sports.  Namibia booked their ticket to the tournament after they finished fourth at the World Skate Games in Italy 2024.

Speaking to this publication yesterday, the team’s spokesperson Stephanie Giersch said the event is massive because it marks the first time Namibia is taking part in this competition.

“We are going to make history by representing Namibia at the World Games for the very first time. This is a massive opportunity for every player who has always dreamed of playing for the national team on the biggest stage inline hockey has to offer,” she said.

In terms of preparations, she said since they were confirmed as participants, the team have been training.

“Since January, we’ve held a training camp every month, participated in four out of five NIIHA tournaments, attended regular club practices, and remained committed to individual skill development.

“This year, the team’s fitness levels were also monitored at each training camp through beep tests, which consistently showed our ongoing improvement. We are confident that we are ready to compete against the world’s best,” she added.  Inline Hockey, often likened to Ice Hockey, is fast-paced and physical but played on inline skates with four players per side, without bodychecking. Games take place on a plastic “sport court” surface, providing a smooth and speedy platform for the lightweight puck.

Inline Hockey has been part of the World Games lineup since 2005.

The 12th edition of the World Games will run from 7 to 17 August, with athletes from across the globe competing in a wide range of non-Olympic and newly recognised sport.
