The Inter-Khelo India Centre (KIC) Under-16 Football Tournament commenced on Tuesday at the Loyem Memorial Astro Turf Ground in Tuensang, bringing together youth teams from various districts in a spirited celebration of grassroots football.
Organised by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, Nagaland, the tournament aims to promote sporting talent from the state’s Aspirational Districts. The two-day event is being hosted by the District Sports Office, Tuensang.
The opening ceremony began with a welcome note by Ajungla, UDA at the Youth Resources Office, Tuensang. The invocation prayer was led by Seotingla, LDA at the District Sports Office.
Welcoming the participants, District Sports Officer Athrong Yimchunger urged the players to uphold discipline and fair play. “This platform is not just about winning or losing, but about learning, growing, and representing your district with pride,” he said.
Deputy Director of the Directorate of Youth Resources and Sports, Kohima, Nyuvitho Nyuthe, attended as the special guest. In his address, he highlighted the importance of nurturing sporting potential in remote areas and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and creating opportunities for youth.
The athletes’ oath was administered by Visapa Yongo, football coach from Shamator district. This was followed by the official declaration of the tournament open by the Deputy Director.
In the opening match, host team KIC Tuensang defeated KIC Noklak 4-2. In the second fixture, KIC Longleng secured a commanding 4-0 victory over KIC Shamator. In the final match of the day, KIC Tuensang again faced KIC Shamator and won 4-2.
The tournament, featuring Khelo India Centres from Tuensang, Noklak, Longleng, and Shamator, will conclude on Wednesday, with the final standings to determine the overall champion.
