Invest in Science, Innovation to power 24-hour economy – Prof. Appiah urges govt
The President of the CSIR College of Science and Technology (CCST), Professor Mark Appiah, has urged the government to make bold investments in science, innovation, and industrial revolution as part of efforts to secure Ghana’s economic future.
He noted that as the government works towards building a prosperous 24-hour economy, it is crucial to back that ambition with strategic investment in science and national-scale innovation, a vision long championed by both the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the College of Science and Development (CCSD).
Professor Appiah made the call during the college’s 5th Congregation ceremony held in Accra, where 63 students graduated with degrees in diverse fields, including fishery science, food science, animal nutrition, climate change, soil health, and plant breeding.
Addressing the ceremony on Friday, July 25, 2025, he emphasised that as CCST pursues a charter to become an autonomous postgraduate research university, major infrastructure upgrades, especially to the registry and administrative systems, are urgently needed to meet academic and regulatory standards.
Also present at the event was Professor Rose Emma Mamaa Entsua-Mensah, widely recognised as the visionary behind the establishment of CCSD. She recounted that the idea was born from the realisation that many highly experienced institutional heads were retiring from CSIR.
Rather than lose their wealth of knowledge, she envisioned a university that would bring these professionals together to train the next generation of scientists and researchers.
