iPhone 17 launch sparks frenzy in India as crowds throng Apple Stores

New Delhi: The launch of Apple’s iPhone 17 in India on Friday witnessed chaotic scenes as eager buyers queued overnight outside Apple Stores, with scuffles breaking out in some locations amid the rush to be among the first to purchase the new devices.

All four of Apple’s flagship stores in Indiam in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Pune, opened at 8 a.m., but queues had formed hours earlier, with some customers waiting overnight. At Mumbai’s BKC Jio Centre, the rush turned unruly when some shoppers attempted to cut the line, sparking fights. Videos shared by PTI showed people shoving and throwing punches before security officials intervened and removed those involved.

Buyers said tempers flared after security failed to control the crowds. “I have been waiting since the morning. Have been standing in a queue… but the security here has no responsibility. People are breaking lines. Those standing behind don’t get the chance to buy the product due to a lack of responsibility among the security officials,” Mohan Yadav, a shopper, told ANI.

The craze was no less intense in New Delhi, where queues stretched across two floors of Saket’s Select Citywalk Mall. Some buyers said they had been waiting since 1 a.m., while others revealed they had travelled from Punjab to be there. A few even admitted calling in sick at work just to attend the launch.

Similar scenes were reported at Apple’s Bengaluru and Pune stores, where long lines of buyers waited for hours to get their hands on the new iPhones.

The iPhone 17 series includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, alongside new Apple Watches and AirPods Pro 3. In India, prices start at Rs 82,900 for the iPhone 17, Rs 1,19,900 for the slim iPhone Air, Rs 1,34,900 for the iPhone 17 Pro and Rs 1,49,900 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Despite the high prices, demand appears strong, with the launch day turnout suggesting another major success for Apple in the Indian market.
