Is Rihanna’s Smurfs Movie A Musical?

Rihanna is set to star in 2025’s upcoming Smurfs reboot movie, raising the question of whether it’s a musical. 2025 is packed with highly-anticipated movies, from new superhero films by Marvel and DC to plenty of family-friendly animated films for everyone to enjoy. Many of these films saw trailers premiere during Super Bowl LIX. While Smurfs‘ trailer was released ahead of the game, it did not air during the actual broadcast. The film’s theatrical release date places it right between Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps, giving it a steep competition.

Luckily for Paramount, the planned Smurfs reboot movie should have a different target audience than the aforementioned superhero blockbusters, offering a more light-hearted family blockbuster. Beyond Rihanna, the film’s cast includes movie stars John Goodman, Nick Offerman, Sandra Oh, Natasha Lyonne, and many more, all featured in voice-acting roles. Rihanna is primarily known as a singer, though she’s had film non-musical film roles before, managing to gross over $1 billion at the box office in total.

Rihanna’s Smurfs Movie Is Expected To Be A Musical

Following the success of 2024’s Best Picture-nominated movie Wicked, which featured pop star Arianne Grande in its cast, the upcoming Smurfs reboot will also be a musical adaptation. The Smurfs franchise dates back to a Belgian comic book series that was released in the 1950s, and while it’s known for its colorful, whimsical nature, this will be the first major iteration to interpret characters like Papa Smurf and Smurfette in a musical. In February 2022, Deadline announced production on new Smurfs films being developed by Paramount Pictures, with the first intended to be a musical. For a while, during production, the film even went under the title Smurfs the Musical. The 2010s saw a long drought in Hollywood musicals, but with Wonka and Wicked making waves at the box office, now is the perfect time for a major studio to attempt something like this, with Rihanna being an excellent leading star who’s likely to bring viewers to theaters.

Another reason to catch Smurfs in theaters is that the 2025 movie will have original songs written and recorded by Rihanna. The singer is fully committed to this film with a role as a producer, personally helping to develop the music that will likely look to contend with Wicked 2 for Best Original Song at the 2026 Oscars. The movie will also include an original song from Desi Trill, with Cardi B, DJ Khaled, Natania, and Subhi lending their voices.
