ISAMA urges private schools to embrace digitalization and inclusion for quality education
By Jones Gadama
The Independent Schools Association of Malawi (ISAMA) has called on private schools in the country to digitalize their systems and make them inclusive to ensure quality education for all learners.
ISAMA President Wycliffe Chimwendo made the call during a press briefing at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre ahead of the association’s annual conference.
The conference, scheduled for May 28-29, will focus on addressing inclusion and digitalization solutions in the education sector.
Chimwendo emphasized that private schools play a vital role in shaping the future of education in Malawi and must adopt inclusive practices to cater to learners with disabilities.
“Learners with disabilities will no longer be barred by inadequate structures and outdated learning materials when inclusion is adopted,” Chimwendo said. He highlighted the importance of creating an enabling environment that allows all learners to thrive.
ISAMA Vice-President Coxley Kamange echoed Chimwendo’s sentiments, stressing that inclusion and digitalization are not luxuries but necessities for quality sustainable education in Malawi.
“Schools must realize that inclusion and digitalization are not just a luxury, but rather the key to quality sustainable education in Malawi,” Kamange said.
The conference theme, “Advancing digitalisation, quality education and standards, inclusion and corporate governance for a sustainable future,” underscores the need for private schools to prioritize digitalization and inclusion.
By embracing technology and inclusive practices, private schools can improve learning outcomes, enhance teacher development, and increase access to information.
This call to action aligns with the World Bank’s Inclusive Digitalization in Eastern and Southern Africa (IDEA) Program, which aims to increase access to the internet and digitally enabled services in the region.
Malawi is set to benefit from the program, with a focus on expanding broadband coverage, improving digital literacy, and enhancing cybersecurity.
As the education sector continues to evolve, ISAMA’s emphasis on digitalization and inclusion serves as a timely reminder of the importance of adapting to the changing needs of learners and educators alike.
By prioritizing inclusive and digitally enabled education, Malawi’s private schools can play a critical role in shaping the country’s future and promoting sustainable development.
