Jabil to invest $125 million for silicon photonics manufacturing plant in Gujarat, India

Jabil, a leading American electronics manufacturing company, reportedly plans to invest around $125 million for a silicon manufacturing plant in Gujarat, India. The announcement was made at the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) Vision Summit which aims to power India’s semiconductor revolution, being held in Gujarat from March 5-7, 2025.

Matt Crowley, the executive vice president of the Global Business Unit said that the company has decades of experience with silicon photonics products. “As we look to the future, we are very excited to announce that we have plans to open a new factory in Gujarat. We are very excited to announce MoU specific to Silicon Photonics manufacturing in the state of Gujarat today,” Crowley said. The plant is reported to be operational this calendar year.

At the IESA Vision Summit 2025, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government in order to set up the plant. “We believe photonics holds immense opportunity in advanced industries like autonomous vehicles, treatment as well as 5G network and artificial intelligence applications,” Crowley said, adding that Jabil’s India operation started in 2003 and the company now employs over 75,000 people in India.

“Silicon Photonics is very strategic for us. The plant will come up before the end of the calendar year,” Crowley noted as he said he believed India is at the right spot for investments to scale.

Gujarat’s Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel added, “This is a significant moment for our state. Jabil’s investment will create job opportunities for the next generation and foster the growth of a domestic semiconductor industry, driving innovation and enhancing our global competitiveness.”

Jabil has been a leader in the photonics industry for over ten years, with experience in designing photonics devices, systems, and developing components for optical networking and AI applications. The company offers both prototyping and large-scale manufacturing services, speeding up time to market for its products in telecommunications, data communications, and AI.

Jabil’s expertise spans a number of different sectors, which include semiconductor equipment, automotive (electric and hybrid vehicles), healthcare (pharmaceutical delivery solutions), and warehouse automation (humanoid robots).
