James Gunn Teases R-Rated DCU Movies After Deadpool & Wolverine’s Success
Following the record-breaking success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Deadpool & Wolverine, DC Universe co-creator James Gunn seems intrigued by the prospect of presenting his superhero films more maturely. The DC Studios boss teases that his expanding universe could feature R-rated movies if the right stories emerge.
Speaking with Collider, Gunn hinted multiple R-rated projects could come from the DCU as he insisted there are no limits to the narratives his studio wants to tell. “It’s not about testing out to see if this thing works. It’s just about telling a story. If a story is going to be R-rated, we’re totally okay with that. If it’s going to be PG, PG-13, or G, I don’t care — whatever is worthy of the story, that’s what we’re going to do,” Gunn said. He followed up by saying there’s “more than one” R-rated project being developed at DC, though he didn’t go into specifics.

A new name has been added to the cast of HBO’s Lanterns, which is set to begin filming in 2025.
Gunn’s DCU potentially making more mature big-screen flicks is partially influenced by the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, the highest-grossing R-rated film in history and seventh-highest-earning superhero movie ever ($1.338 billion worldwide). Gunn cited how much people adore Deadpool and believes R-rated DCU projects with good stories can ensure audiences relate well to their characters. “People love that character. People love that format for that thing. You know Peacemaker is unrated, basically. So, we have all sorts. I like the idea of doing all sorts of different things.”

The DCU’s first TV show, Creature Commandos, could offer a glimpse of what fans should expect on the big screen, as the Frank Grillo-led series is rated TV-MA. Premiering on Dec. 5, the animated Max series chronicles the adventures of the eponymous black-ops team assembled by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and picks up from the first season of Peacemaker. The show, which kicks off Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, preludes the Superman reboot, the opening of the DCU’s film slate and its “true start”, according to Gunn.

Will the DCU’s R-Rated Movies Do Better Than the Joker Sequel?
Gunn hopes the DCU’s planned R-rated films are much more successful than Joker: Folie à Deux, DC’s latest R-rated project that will cost Warner Bros. hundreds of millions. His main focus on the DCU film slate is the Superman reboot, which stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. Gunn has been teasing the first Superman trailer for weeks, recently hinting that it’s ready.
Additionally, Gunn has been working on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which sees House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock portray the eponymous superhero and Matthias Schoenarts as the villainous Krem. Meanwhile, the DCU’s upcoming Batman film, The Brave and The Bold, is still searching for its Bruce Wayne, as Swamp Thing and The Authority remain in development to round up the Chapter One movie slate.
Superman opens in theaters on Jul. 11, 2025.
