Charles Kelly’s first staff as the Jacksonville State football head coach has started to come together.
Kelly started building his staff the day after he was hired, retaining Rick Trickett as offensive line coach and hiring Rick’s son Clint as the offensive coordinator. The defensive side of the staff started coming together as the New Year turned, with Vinnie Sunseri joining as defensive coordinator and Deshaun Davis joining as linebackers coach.
There’s still plenty of roles remaining, especially with Rod Smith and Rod McDowell heading to Marshall, according to their bios on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Former Gamecocks coach Rich Rodriguez hired Ryan Garrett for his same receiver coaching role and has taken a lot of support staff members with him.

The Alabama native and former Auburn standout was announced as the linebackers coach on Jan. 2. He’s another young coach whose career started at UCF in 2022 before spending the last two years with North Alabama. He played at Auburn, earning All-SEC honors before being drafted in the sixth round of the NFL draft. He would bounce around the NFL and CFL until 2021 but didn’t make an active roster.
Defensive Coordinator: Vinnie Sunseri
On Jan. 2, Vinnie Sunseri was announced as the defensive coordinator, it is unclear what position he will end up coaching, if any. He comes to Jacksonville after a year stint with Washington, where he helped the Huskies to become a top five passing defense unit. He was with the New England Patriots four the previous four seasons and played at Alabama, winning national championships in 2011 and 2012.
Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach: Clint Trickett
The second hire that was made official by Kelly back on Dec. 22, 2024, Trickett is a rising star in the coaching profession. He comes over from Georgia Southern where he was the pass game coordinator while coaching tight ends and inside receivers. He has spent time at Marshall and FAU. He played quarterback at Florida State and West Virginia.
Offensive line coach: Rick Trickett
As of Jan. 2, Trickett is still the only coach to be retained by Kelly, who wasted no time in keeping the veteran offensive line coach. Almost 24 hours after being officially announced as coach, Kelly announced the retainment of Trickett. He has coached at Florida State, West Virginia, Auburn and LSU. He has coached twice with Kelly at FSU and Auburn.
