‘John Rambo’ Origin Film in Development From ‘Sisu’ Director & ‘Black Adam’ Writers
After the origins of Batman, James Bond, and Han Solo were shown on the big screen, it looks like Rambo is next. Alongside Rocky Balboa, John Rambo is one of the defining roles of Sylvester Stallone’s career and helped cement him as a cinematic icon. Stallone has since split from the Rocky franchise due to a falling out with producer Irwin Winkler, who owns the property. Now it looks like Stallone’s other big title franchise is about to move on without him as a prequel to John Rambo is being developed six years after Stallone said goodbye to the character in Rambo: The Last Blood.
Deadline reports that Millennium Media is developing a Rambo prequel titled John Rambo and shopping the movie for buyers at the Cannes Film Festival. John Rambo is set to be directed by Sisu filmmaker Jalmari Helander, with a screenplay by Black Adam writing duo Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. The movie, which will chronicle Rambo’s time during the Vietnam War, is in the early stages of casting. Stallone is reportedly aware of the project but is not involved in any capacity: however, the door is open for him to take on a producing role. Regarding the announcement, Millennium President Jonathan Yunger said:
“We are thrilled to introduce a fresh new chapter to the Rambo legacy. This project is a tribute to one of the best franchises in movie history that will appeal to both longtime fans and new audiences alike. With Jalmari Helander at the helm—a filmmaker of exceptional vision and energy—we’ve found the perfect director to deliver a high-concept action-packed experience.”
Director Jalmari Helander added:
“I have been the biggest fan of Rambo since the age of 11. It is so surreal to be in a situation where I can actually make my own Rambo movie. The chain of events that got me here makes, in a fantastic way, my whole childhood make sense. I can’t wait to bring the greatest action hero back to the big screen where he belongs!”
Rambo’s Franchise Evolution, Explained
Lionsgate
The character of John Rambo originated in David Morrell’s 1972 novel, First Blood, which was later adapted into a feature film of the same name in 1982. While the Rambo franchise is now associated with one of the big action movie series of the 1980s, the original film is a more intense, quieter, and subdued film about a Vietnam War vet grappling with PTSD. The success of First Blood eventually led to the 1985 sequel, Rambo: First Blood Part II, which is where the series found its identity as one of the ultimate 1980s action film franchises.

The third film in the series, Rambo III, opened in theaters in May 1988 and put the series on hiatus for 20 years until Stallone returned with Rambo. The seemingly final film in the franchise, 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood, hit theaters and received disappointing reviews. Similar to the Terminator franchise, the Rambo films have never captured the box office highs of the second film in the franchise. Both 21st-century revivals averaged a little over $40 million at the domestic box office, only turning a profit on their $50 million budgets due to international box office returns.
This isn’t the first time an extension of the Rambo franchise has been talked about. A streaming series that would have passed the baton over to John Rambo’s son was pitched and ultimately scrapped. Given Millennium Media’s track record with films like the Has Fallen trilogy and The Expendables, John Rambo sounds like it will be an action movie in the vein of the latter sequels. However, that can’t help but feel like it misses the point of the original First Blood film and the Rambo character. His time in Vietnam was not a glamorous action film, but a nightmare that haunted him.
