John Williams’s SHOCKING Confession: Oscar Winning Composer Says ‘Never Liked Film Music Very Much’

One of the most celebrated film composers in history, John Williams has shockingly expressed a deep ambivalence towards the vert art form that has given him global acclaim. Despite creating some of the most memorable scores in cinematic history over a span of 60 years, the 93-year-old maestro has now revealed he never held film music in high regard.

In an interview with author Tim Grieving for The Guardian, Williams gave a tell all, including his critique of the genre, stating, “I never liked film music very much.”

Williams, the winner of five Academy Awards and 50 Oscar nominations state that most film music lack substance, adding, “Film music, however good it can be – and it usually isn’t, other than maybe an eight-minute stretch here and there.” He further added, “I just think the music isn’t there.”

According to Williams, much of public’s admiration for movie scores stems from nostalgia than musical merit. Williams further criticised the structure of typical film compositions, calling them “ephemeral” and “fragmentary,” adding, “until somebody reconstructs it, it isn’t anything that we can even consider as a concert piece.”

Notably, Williams’ scores for Jaws, Star Wars, Schindler’s List, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, E.T., Superman, Harry Potter, Home Alone, and Saving Private Ryan are widely considered masterpieces, many of them instantly recognizable and often performed in concert halls around the world.

His most recent original film score was for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in 2023, a project he initially suggested might be his last, before later clarifying he would continue composing.

One of the reasons Williams’ scores are often so highly regarded are because of the influence they draw from romantic and classical composers like Johannes Brahms and Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
