Karn Sharma’s 3-wicket haul brings Mumbai Indians back into the game against Delhi Capitals

Just when it looked like Delhi Capitals were cruising towards their 206-run target, a middle-overs masterclass from Karn Sharma turned the tide for Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, April 13.

Karun Nair’s explosive 89 had set up the platform, but DC lost four wickets in the space of five overs, slumping from 121/2 to 164/6 by the end of the 16th over, now needing 42 runs in 24 balls.

Karn Sharma’s game-changing spell:

  • 11.4 overs: Abishek Porel, set on 33, miscued a slog-sweep and was caught by Naman Dhir at deep square leg.

  • 13.3 overs: Tristan Stubbs tried to go big but only managed a top-edge that again landed in Dhir’s hands at long-on.

  • 15.3 overs: KL Rahul was deceived by flight and lofted a mistimed slog straight back to Karn Sharma, who completed the catch off his own bowling.

Karn finished with impressive figures of 4-0-36-3, turning the match on its head. His wickets came just in time, as DC’s lower order now has to deliver 42 runs off the final 24 deliveries, with Vipraj Nigam and Ashutosh Sharma at the crease.

Adding to DC’s worries, MI’s spinners applied pressure in tandem, with Mitchell Santner also picking up a key wicket earlier. The last five overs yielded just 36 runs and cost DC four wickets.

Karn Sharma’s impact today shows that even in a match dominated by batters early on, clever bowling in the middle overs can still dictate the result.

With 10.5 runs required per over, the match now hangs in the balance.
