Katy Perry fined for filming Lifetimes music video in protected area without permission – Music News
The team behind Katy Perry’s Lifetimes music video have been fined for filming in a protected area without permission.
Spanish authorities launched an investigation into the video’s production in July 2024 due to portions of the footage being taken inside the dune of s’Espalmador, a protected islet within the Ses Salines National Park on the Balearic Islands.
Investigators confirmed that the production company behind the video failed to obtain the necessary permissions from the Balearic Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries and carried out filming without authorisation.
It has now been revealed that the company was fined €6,001 ($7,000/£5,200), according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin. While officials deemed the offence “serious”, they didn’t hand out any additional penalties as no lasting damage was discovered in the area.
The company promptly settled the fine.
In the Lifetimes music video, Katy can be seen cliff jumping, dancing on a beach in a bikini, and partying at nightlife spots across Ibiza and Formentera.
After the investigation hit headlines, a spokesperson for the Firework hitmaker’s label, Capitol Records, insisted that they believed they had the necessary permits to film on the beach.
“The local video production company assured us that all necessary permits for the video were secure,” they told The Independent at the time. “We have since learned that one permit was in process, although we were given verbal authority to go ahead.”
They insisted they had “adhered to all regulations associated with filming in this area and have the utmost respect for this location and the officials tasked with protecting it”.
