The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came under fire from political parties in Punjab and Delhi on Wednesday, a day after purported videos surfaced of party national convener Arvind Kejriwal arriving with a cavalcade for a 10-day ‘Vipassana’ session at the Dhamma Dhaja Vipassana Centre at Anandgarh village in Hoshiarpur.

Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa said when AAP was formed, it had promised to “end VIP culture”. “During the [2022] Punjab poll, Arvind Kejriwal and [CM] Bhagwant Mann said those who demand security should leave politics. Yesterday, Kejirwal’s cavalcade consisted of 32 cars. They [AAP leaders] have done everything opposite to what they said,” he said.

Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Daljit Singh Cheema asked Mr. Mann why the AAP chief was “given facilities reserved for the head of state”. “It was condemnable that a curfew-like situation was created for farmers and they were not allowed to come to the capital [Chandigarh] to protest, while a red carpet welcome was accorded to Kejriwal with vehicles escorting him for a Vipassana session.”

‘Exposes falsehood’

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said the video of the convoy “clearly exposes the falsehood of his claims of being a common man”. “For 12 years, Kejriwal enjoyed luxuries using taxpayers’ money in Delhi. Now that the people have given their verdict, he is trying to squander taxpayers’ money in Punjab.”

Mr. Sachdeva said the visit to Punjab was not motivated by ‘Vipassana’ but by “bickering within AAP”.

Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the AAP chief “moves like a maharaja [king]”.  “If power was his test, he has failed miserably. AAP’s truth is out, deception, hypocrisy, and VIP arrogance at its peak,” he said on X.

Former Delhi Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit accused the AAP chief of getting used to a “pompous and lavish lifestyle”.

There was no reaction from AAP. Mr. Kejriwal has come to Anandgarh for the second time for ‘Vipassana’. His first visit was in December 2023. Since the Delhi poll results were announced, he has not made public appearances and has confined himself to party activities.
