Kellogg’s comes to the rescue amid summer holiday juggle

I love the break from the morning school run chaos and getting to spend more time with my children as a family, going at our own pace and not that of a set timetable.

But I hate the juggle and the guilt of having to work while they want to have fun, and trying to manage that as best you can with childcare can run into the hundreds of pounds, depending on how much and how often you need it.

I’m lucky that my ‘village’ means that we can usually manage between us and save our money for activities, trips and holidays. But this summer has been a little different.

Trying to find something that suits both of my boys can be tricky, but the Kellogg’s Football Camps have given us the best of all worlds, for the price of a participating Kellogg’s item.

For starters, they both love playing football, so that was a box ticked. I knew they would be doing something they enjoyed and, with football-based activities led by qualified coaches, something they would learn from too.

We picked the camp at Accrington Stanley Community Trust, but there are others within a reasonable radius, including Blackburn Rovers Community Trust, Bolton Wanderers in the Community, Burnley, Manchester City and Stockport County Community Trust.

My boys’ ages meant that they were in different groups, but any parent of boys will tell you that’s not always a bad thing, especially when it comes to playing sport and being competitive.

Come rain or shine the sessions run from 9am to 3pm and start in a classroom before going out onto the 3G pitch with the coaches to do some drills, that are tailored to the ages of the boys and girls. And no matter their ability everything was done with a smile – just happy with a ball at their feet – and plenty of encouragement from the staff.

Then it’s back inside for snack time, watching football highlights on a television, before going out onto the pitches again for an hour or so before lunch.

During the breaks children can participate in quizzes like, Guess the Footballer, or Guess the Club Badge, which really boosts the camaraderie and helps new friendships form.

Mini football matches are organised after lunch, putting into practice what they have learned in the morning coaching sessions, before pick-up at 3pm – tired, sweaty, but very happy.

At the end of the first week, the football camp goers were able to make the short walk to watch an open training session for the first team at Accrington Stanley’s Wham Stadium, which unfortunately my boys were unable to attend as we had a prior arrangement but it looked a lot of fun for the group.

But he had enjoyed the previous two days so much that he was desperate to go back, which is as good a recommendation as any.

He described his last day there as “the best day ever”, so I’m sure he’ll be back for even more.

To book a Kellogg’s Football Camp, purchase a participating Kellogg’s pack during the Free Camp Day Purchase Period and using a smartphone, scan the QR code or visit kelloggsfc.com then log in or register for a Kellogg’s account, enter your details (mobile phone number, address, postcode, preferred club and preferred shirt size for the Football Shirts Prize Draws, then enter the last four digits of the on-pack bar code.

After this, select a club to view whether there are available Free Camp Places that week and request a Free Camp Day Code.

Alternatively, you can also enter your post code and child’s age to view your closest available Free Camp Place for your child’s age on the map.

Once you have your code there is a form to fill in online, with yours and your child’s details, and then booking is complete and the football fun begins.
