The Kozhikode Corporation is preparing to declare itself the first in the State to be free of extreme poverty. A major step towards this goal was taken by handing over 32 vacant flat units at the Kalluthankadavu housing complex to families identified as facing extreme poverty. Minister for Local Self-Government M.B. Rajesh handed over the flats at an event held at the Kozhikode Town Hall on Saturday (April 19).
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that the project to eradicate extreme poverty was the first of its kind in the country, and that no other State in India had taken up such an initiative. He lauded the K-SMART software, which enables local bodies to provide their services online. He added that making services accessible online from anywhere in the world has significantly increased the revenue of local bodies in the State.
Mr. Rajesh also inaugurated a project to build houses for 25 families under the PMAY-LIFE scheme. The Corporation is purchasing 84 cents of land at Nellikode for this purpose. Each family will receive 3 cents of land and ₹5.25 lakh to build a house. Additional funds will be sourced through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) schemes of business houses. The 32 families allotted flat units at Kalluthankadavu will also receive necessary furniture and other amenities. The Corporation will cover their water and electricity bills for a specified period.
Through a survey, the Corporation has identified 814 people facing extreme poverty within the city. Various projects have been launched to uplift them. As part of the initiative, food is being distributed daily to 650 persons, and 659 individuals receive medical aid. So far, 28 people have been provided with a means of livelihood under the project. The goal is to declare the city free of extreme poverty by November 2025.
