‘Kraven the Hunter’ Star Alessandro Nivola Is Unsure Why the Spider-Man Movie Flopped
The Sony Spider-Man Villain-verse, or just villain-verse, or just Spider-verse, or that one with Madame Web in it (they never did settle on a proper name), has officially come to a close. We wish we could say it went out with a bang, but the recently released Kraven the Hunter helped to define the franchise as the biggest so-bad-it’s-good cinematic universe of all-time. The film received terrible reviews from critics and audiences, who had already lost hope after the first trailers were released. Alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular anti-hero, the film also stars Alessandro Nivola as the Rhino, the film’s actual villain. But, the actor himself isn’t aware of the extreme negative backlash surrounding the movie, and is struggling to come up with a reason as to why it flopped.
“I haven’t read much of the reviews, but my agents sent me all the trades’ reviews, which were some of the best reviews I’ve ever had for anything,” Alessandro Nivola surprisingly told The Hollywood Reporter. To be fair, critics haven’t slated Nivola’s performance, just everything else about the character’s design and the movie as a whole.
“But I don’t really pay too much attention to critical and fan response, because it can be a black hole,” he continued. “I went through all of that before with Many Saints of Newark. It was another situation where my performance was praised, but the movie was not.”
Kraven the Hunter is directed by J.C. Chandor (Margin Call & A Most Violent Year), who is a relative newcomer to the superhero movie system. Nivola was asked if Chandor’s individual voice was swallowed up by the studio system. “I really don’t know what happened behind the scenes,” he said. Nivola conceded that “maybe there were too many chefs,” referring to multiple studio executives who likely would have influenced the final picture.
What’s Next for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe?
The short answer to the above question is: nothing. Kraven the Hunter marked the end of the villain-verse, which is officially one of the worst-received cinematic franchises of all-time. Not a single film in the franchise achieved a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score — Venom: Let There Be Carnage was somehow the highest-rated entry at 58%. Ironically, the franchise’s lowest point, 2024’s Madame Web, is also its highest achievement. The film has become a pop culture hit, with audiences hailing it as the best so-bad-its-good superhero movie ever made.

The Spider-Man universe still lives on, but the iterations of the villains we’ve seen in standalone movies will likely never appear again (no more Morbin’ time). Marvel Studios are currently working on Spider-Man 4, starring Tom Holland and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi). Meanwhile, Sony Animation is also producing the long-delayed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was originally intended to release in early 2024, but was postponed indefinitely. The latest report suggests the film has been completely re-worked by the studio.

Kraven the Hunter is the fourth movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, set in the same Marvel continuity as Tom Hardy’s Venom and Jared Leto’s Morbius. Played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the titular Kraven goes on a solo adventure as an anti-hero, this time independent of his comic book counterpart’s crusade to hunt down Peter Parker.
