Kriebish and Frank crowned Junior Athletes of the Year
The future of Papua New Guinea sports shone brightly as Timonaliz Alarcoz Kriebish and Gaba Frank were named the Coca-Cola Euro-Pacific Partners PNG Junior Female and Male Athletes of the Year, respectively.
Timonaliz Alarcoz Kriebish, a promising rising star in squash, took home the Junior Female Athlete of the Year award. Her former coach, Madako Junior Suari, accepted the award on her behalf, expressing immense pride in her journey.
“It’s been a privilege to witness her growth and dedication from the beginning,” Suari remarked. He thanked SP Brewery, the PNG Olympic Committee, the PNG Sports Federation, and all sponsors for supporting the event.
Suari particularly acknowledged Kriebish’s coaches and her family, especially her parents, whose “unwavering love and commitment are the backbone of her journey.”
Kriebish had an exceptionally active 2024, competing in 11 competitions across Australia, Oceania, Italy, Portugal, and Scotland in the Under-13 and Under-15 divisions. Her impressive results included three first-place finishes, three second-place finishes, and a third-place finish, among others.
Other notable finalists in this category included Ani Geua Gavera, a 13-year-old weightlifting sensation who secured her second gold medal in Auckland, New Zealand, following in her mother’s footsteps. Also nominated was Kolita Hakena, a rising tennis player who won the Under-14 girls’ singles title at the 2024 West Pacific Regional Championships and represented the Pacific Oceania team at the Australian Team Championships.
The Coca-Cola Euro-Pacific Partners PNG Junior Male Athlete of the Year award was presented to 17-year-old cricket prodigy, Gaba Frank. Hailing from Pari village in Port Moresby, Frank burst onto the cricket scene in 2024, accumulating numerous awards and accolades within eight months.
Frank was selected for the Under-19 team to compete in the Men’s World Cup Qualifiers in Samoa, and his impressive performance earned him a scholarship to train and play in Sydney, New South Wales. He has since been elevated to the prestigious PNG Barramundi squad.
In his acceptance speech, Frank humbly thanked “the Heavenly Father for everything made possible tonight.” He extended his gratitude to the guests, dignitaries, cricket fans, Cricket PNG CEO Mr. Richard Dunn, all staff, and major sponsor SP Brewery for their trust and support.
“On behalf of my family and myself, I want to thank you all once again,” Frank concluded.
Other finalists for the Junior Male Athlete of the Year included Alan Savara, a product of PNG AFL’s New Kick program, who secured a playing contract with the Gold Coast Suns U16 team. Also nominated was River Jordan, an 11-year-old tennis talent.
