La Beauté Louis Vuitton LV Rouge Lipsticks: Review

Welcome to Robb Recommends, a regular series in which our editors and contributors endorse something they’ve tried and loved—and think will change your life for the better.

There’s something about fall that screams lipstick. Summer? That’s for lighter fare, à la a fantastic balm or, frankly, nothing at all. But when that first leaf hits the ground, that’s when lipstick takes back its prime position in my purse. And now, just before the weather turns, the folks at Louis Vuitton are dropping their long-awaited beauty line. The maison tapped Pat McGrath, the make-up mastermind behind her own brand, known for superb, pigmented products, to lead the charge.

The star of the new La Beauté collection, which also includes a flurry of eyeshadows and balms, is its expansive lipstick lineup, called LV Rouge. There are 55 shades to choose from here (a nod to the LV Roman numerals), a rather large offering on the brand’s first launch, that includes 27 satin and 28 matte hues enriched with shea butter and hyaluronic acid.

Right off the bat, the black-and-gold packaging makes a chic statement. Created by industrial designer Konstantin Grcic (his first foray into the beauty space), the lipsticks have a lovely weight to them and a magnetic closure, adorned with etchings of Louis Vuitton’s logo and its signature Monogram Flower on the cap. That flora makes an appearance on the lipstick’s refill piece, too, which makes it all too easy to swap a new shade into the main component, depending on your mood.

The packaging is exactly what you’d expect: glamorous and full of nods to the brand.

The lipstick’s scent, too, draws you in—a delightful aroma of jasmine, mimosa, and rose crafted by McGrath and Vuitton’s master perfumer, Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. The fragrance was created specifically for LV Rouge, and it’s perfectly balanced, offering a quick whiff upon opening the tube that doesn’t linger under your nose while you’re wearing it.

With McGrath at the helm as creative director, LV has set the bar high in terms of quality. And I can confirm it hits the mark. I tried out 896 Monogram Rouge, a satin lipstick described as a fusion of its famed brown Monogram canvas and a classic red color, as well as 203 Rose Odyssée, a sienna-rose matte shade. Personally, I am a satin lipstick gal at heart, but I was surprised by how much I adored No. 203. It was a very moisturizing matte, with very little transfer and a long wear time. Plus, it barely budged while I ate and drank throughout the day. The Monogram Rouge was just as lovely, richly pigmented, and easy to wear on the lips—in fact, I barely even felt it. With No. 896, you really get that hydration boost, too.

La Beauté Louis Vuitton LV Rouge Lipsticks: Review

La Beauté Louis Vuitton has gone viral already, as the products’ price tags began dotting headlines around the internet. A tube of LV Rouge retails for $160, with those refills set at $69 apiece. Among other fashion-house makeup brands, this is toward the top end: A matte lipstick from Gucci beauty line retails for $50; Hermès serves up a satin option for $81; and a higher-priced iteration from Chanel sits at $195. But LV’s line isn’t your regular beauty launch—it’s a collectible, an item that’s meant to be treasured as well as worn. And that’s how I’ll be treating it when I tote it about in my handbag this fall and beyond.

La Beauté Louis Vuitton will officially hit the beauty world on August 29, available in select stores and on louisvuitton.com.
