Athletes from the Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow Athletics Club stable competed at the Microplus UK Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham this weekend, with high jumper Morgan Lake and 400m runner Alex Haydock-Wilson taking the title in their respective events.
While George Mills, Neil Gourley and Scott Lincoln stole the headlines in Birmingham by setting new championship records, there were several impressive displays from WSEH’s athletes.
Lake had shown some good form coming into the championships, clearing a season’s best 1.93m to take the title in Banskobystrická latka in the day’s leading up to the event.
She managed to better that clearance by one centimetre as she defended her UK indoor crown in Birmingham.
Lake is pushing to get closer to the world’s elite in her favoured discipline and regularly comes out on top against her UK rivals. This was her third straight indoor title, and she managed it in style, flying over the bar at 1.94m. Her aim now will be to get a little closer to the elusive 2m mark and push for titles on the European and international circuit.
After seeing British outdoor record holder Amber Anning (Brighton & Hove) take the women’s 400m gold in 51.40s ahead of Lina Nielsen (Shaftesbury Barnet; Tony Lester), it was Haydock Wilson’s (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow; Dai Greene) time to deliver a statement win at the start of the new season. He clocked 46.70 seconds to take the title, having also ran quickest in the semi-finals, clocking a slightly slower 46.79seconds on Saturday.
WSEH’s Jordan Aki-Sawyerr (Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow; Femi Akinsanya), was edged into silver medal position in the triple jump by reigning outdoor champion Efe Uwaifo (Harrow; Daniel Hooker).
Aki-Sawyerr surged into contention in the final two rounds, finishing just three centimetres shy of Uwaifo with 15.61m.
Henry Clarkson (Glasgow Jaguars; Linda Nicholson) took bronze with a last-gasp effort of 15.45m.
