Rekha Gupta, expressing grave concern over unprecedented pollution levels in Delhi during the month of May. Citing data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), she stated that Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has remained above 500 for several days—a scenario previously unseen in this month.

Atishi highlighted that from 2022 to 2024, there was not a single day in May when the AQI crossed 243. In contrast, in May 2025, several days have seen AQI breach the 500 mark, which she described as “extremely hazardous.” She alleged that the failure of the current BJP-led government in Delhi, with four engines—BJP, LG office, MCD, and central agencies—has resulted in a complete breakdown of air quality management.

Pointing fingers at Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Atishi questioned why pollution in May has reached such critical levels for the first time. She demanded that the government explain what measures it has taken and why those have failed to yield results. She added that the double blow of heat and pollution is severely affecting children, the elderly, and vulnerable groups, with hospitals seeing a rise in respiratory patients.

Atishi concluded her letter with three direct questions:

  • Why has Delhi experienced such extreme pollution in May for the first time?
  • Should this be considered a major failure of the BJP’s four-engine government?
  • Will the people of Delhi now have to struggle to breathe every summer?

She urged the Chief Minister to respond to these concerns and clarify what concrete steps are being taken to tackle pollution, warning that so far, no meaningful impact is visible on the ground.
