Remember Leighton Meester’s short-lived pop music career?
In a new interview with Bustle, the Gossip Girl actress reflected on her time pursuing music professionally and opened up about why she decided to stop working in the pop genre.
Meester released a couple of pop singles (including “Somebody to Love” with Robin Thicke and “Your Love’s a Drug) in 2009 and earned a top-10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with the Cobra Starship collaboration “Good Girls Go Bad” the same year.

However, she then took a few years away from music before returning in 2014 with the more folk-laced Heartstrings album — and now we know why.
“I just didn’t feel like I sang that well in those songs,” said Meester of her pop music.
“That’s why I stopped doing that style of songwriting, because I didn’t feel really good when I would sing it,” she added. “That was something that I figured out in my 20s.”
In between Meester’s first run of singles and Heartstrings, she also recorded a few country songs for the 2010 film Country Strong, in which she starred alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw.
Earlier this year, the mother of two’s music earned a shoutout from an unlikely supporter: Flavor Flav. After she and husband Adam Brody lost their home in the Los Angeles wildfires, the Public Enemy rapper filmed a TikTok video set to “Somebody to Love.”
“Starting to hype up my girl Leighton Meester and help her family recover from the fire,” wrote Flav at the time, adding in the post’s caption, “Stream @LeightonMeester Somebody to Love and use the song in yo TikTok’s.”

Currently, Meester is gearing up for an upcoming role in season 2 of Netflix’s Nobody Wants This. She opened up to Bustle about becoming more selective in her career as of late. “It’s been really, very lovely to do a couple of shows where there is that feeling of: there could be a future there,” she said. “But I don’t know.”
“People are always asking, ‘What do you want to do? Where do you see yourself? Where do you want to go?’ And I’m like, I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s motherhood or this current situation or this business,” she added. You kind of can’t be like, ‘I know what I’m doing three years from now.’ I’m just, like, okay right now.”
Meester continued, “I just feel like being in the moment and figuring it out as I go along, because that’s all we can do, you know?
