Lenny Kravitz Reflects on ‘Hunger Games’ and New Film Projects
Lenny Kravitz has movies on his mind.
The multiple Grammy Award-winning artist has been rocking the airwaves, charts and stages since signing his first recording contract in the late 1980s.
Then, with his portray of cool cat Cinna in “The Hunger Games” films, the first of which dropped in 2012, the American music man was discovered by a new generation of fans.
“I was a very interesting thing to happen,” he tells Variety AU/NZ. “And then, right after that I’d hear all these young kids yelling in the street when they’d see me. They were very young.” His music caught fire with millennials and Gen Z. There’s little doubt “it was from that movie,” Kravitz admits. “That was was a really good experience. I was glad to be a part of it.”
That was more than a decade ago. Since then, the American artist has released several albums and contributed the anthemic “Road To Freedom”, a song he wrote, performed, and produced for the 2023 Netflix film “Rustin”, a biopic on the human rights advocate Bayard Rustin and his pivotal role in America’s civil rights movement.
“That was a really great film and a great bit of history to be, you know, led out,” Kravitz continues, “because some of the people didn’t know about him and (his) history in the civil rights movement. I was honoured to write the song for that film.”

Is Kravitz ready for another dive into cinema? “Absolutely,” he insists. “I’m gonna make my own film for the album that comes after the next one.”
Kravitz spoke with Variety AU/NZ ahead of his domestic arena tour in support of his 12th and latest studio album, “Blue Electric Light”, from 2024.
Presented by TEG Live, the November 2025 domestic lap of Kravitz’ ‘“Blue Electric Light Tour 2025” will stop by Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Melbourne, Mildura, for his first visit to the regional Victorian spot, and comes to a halt with a performance at the bp Adelaide Grand Final.
The last time Kravitz toured Australia was back in 2012, when cinema-goers were first getting acquainted with Katniss Everdeen.
“I’ve always loved Australia. I had some of my best memories on tour there years ago, and I haven’t done it properly in so long,” he explains from his studio in the Bahamas, where he recorded “Blue Electric Light”.
“So, this is the first of many,” he continues, “I’m going to continue. There won’t be a break between this album and the next album, really. Because I’ll be touring this album for another year through next summer. So, it’ll be two years of touring Blue Electric Light. Then there might be a couple of months [off] and then I’m going to drop the next record. So I’ll come back again. This is the first time back in, but I’m going to make this a regular thing. We don’t have time to not keep going.”
