Lewis Hamilton apologises to Sky Sports F1 after snapping in interview | F1 | Sport
Lewis Hamilton apologised to Sky Sports F1 reporter Rachel Brookes after his prickly interview following the Spanish Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion was downbeat as a result of another dispirited race for Ferrari and snapped when questioned after a sixth-placed finish.
Hamilton was overtaken by Nico Hulkenberg in the Sauber late in the race, only to be bumped up a spot following Max Verstappen’s 10-second penalty. But he is yet to secure a podium in the colours of his new team and was visibly emotional as he spoke to Brookes.
When asked if he had any immediate thoughts on the race, Hamilton replied: “Not particularly, it was not a great day. The strategy was good, the team did a great job. Just, that’s it.”
Brookes could sense that Hamilton was struggling and said: “I hate seeing you in this mood.” But the 40-year-old snapped back and fumed: “Well what do you want me to say!? I had a really bad day and I’ve got nothing to say.
“It was a difficult day, I’ve got nothing else to add to it. There’s no point explaining it. It’s not your fault I’ve just not got anything to say.”
Brookes, offering some support to a frustrated driver, said that she hoped Ferrari would be able to find some answers for him. But he only replied: “I’m sure they won’t, the answer is probably just me.”
Several of Hamilton’s interviews with world media went similarly. He mustered just a few words for each and expressed little optimism about the future.
His prickly Sky interview garnered plenty of attention on social media and prompted the Brit to apologise to Brookes behind the scenes, according to her colleague David Croft.
“He was really down on himself and no one likes to see that,” the commentator said on The Fast and the Curious podcast. “Because at the end of the day, whether you’re a fan or not, Lewis Hamilton is the greatest racing driver we’ve ever seen. Statistically he is the greatest, I think he’s the greatest even without the stats.
“He wears his heart on his sleeve and should be applauded for that, because he does a lot of good when he wears his heart on his sleeve. He did apologise to Rachel Brookes for being so down in the dumps. Off camera he said: ‘I’m really sorry about that, I’m just so down.'”
“And that just shows you the extent that he really was down, he’s not putting it on for the cameras, trust me.”
Hamilton was off the back of a triple-header and now enjoys a week’s break before travelling to Montreal for the Canadian GP.
