Liberty’s 150th anniversary collection with ex-Gucci creative director

The new collection, which launched online at Liberty and in store today (9 October), draws inspiration from Liberty’s longstanding links with craftmanship and its proximity to Carnaby Street – a symbol of British countercultural style and music.

Featuring coats, bags, dresses and pyjama sets, key pieces in the collection include the Nelson coat – a reimagining of classic naval tailoring in velvet and felted cashmere – a reworked archival Liberty print velvet dress, metallic-detailed silk pyjamas featuring a Union Jack print, and a kilt made using newly designed Liberty tartan – created in Scotland for the collection.

A new Liberty logo features throughout the collection – a bold Double L in a clean, deco-inspired form alongside a more organic version of the logo. Key colours include navy, royal blue and burgundy.

Retail prices range from £125 for a silk scarf up to £1,995 for a heavy wool-cashmere coat.

Adil Mehboob-Khan, CEO at Liberty London, told Drapers: “For the Golden Quarter, we wanted to do a special collection, focussed on fashion, focused on accessories. And we have a history of great designers, participating to Liberty collections. So we thought of Frida, because she’s a master of craft and a fashion historian. Everything she does is referenced, she has a real passion for the history of design, for what’s coming next.

“When we knocked on her door in Rome, she said yes: she’s a fan of Liberty. We also discovered that she is passionate about Britain and the role of Britain in fashion. She loved the idea of creating a collection to celebrate our birthday.”

Italian designer Giannini, who was creative director at Gucci from 2006 to 2014, said “Liberty is more than a store – it’s a cultural landmark and artistic movement. Its founder, Arthur Lasenby Liberty, created a movement that fused art, nature, and craft. Designing Hypernova 150 was about capturing that vision – reborn through modern eyes.

“It’s a privilege to design for a brand whose name is seen as a style leader in the history of art and design. I am really proud and honoured to have been chosen.”
