Listen to L5’s “Momma We Made It”: New Rap Music Today
L5: “Momma We Made It”
Last week, rap’s favorite internet comedian Druski released a viral skit titled “The new generation of rappers are all demonic,” where he’s in a studio screaming threats at the top of his lungs like he’s wielding a sledgehammer. Immediately it was clear that the video is a parody of the new generation of hot-blooded Atlanta rappers, including 2Sdxrt3all and L5, both of whom rap like they’re in a constant state of road rage. But as funny as the skit is, it also exposes the limits of a scene that typically lacks the emotional complexity of its inspirations, YoungBoy and Chicago drill. That’s why I like L5’s new track “Momma We Made It”—it deepens the style by blending anger with a kind of celebratory melodic riffing. If there’s a song to show that this Atlanta wave is more than Druski’s skit, this is it.
With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
Check out previous Ones, and listen to new music from L5 and more on our Spotify playlist.
