Liverpool Player Could Join Bayer Leverkusen in Wirtz Swap Deal

A Liverpool player could move to Bayer Leverkusen as part of a deal for Florian Wirtz, according to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Liverpool are edging closer to what would be a club-record transfer for Florian Wirtz, the playmaker who has established himself as one of the best in the world in his young career thus far. In Wirtz, Liverpool would be making yet another statement to the rest of the Premier League, having already agreed a deal for Jeremie Frimpong.

Now, it seems that in order for Wirtz to move to Merseyside, a Liverpool player may be headed in the other direction to complete the deal, along with a transfer fee. Plettenberg has reported that Leverkusen are targeting a goalkeeper, centre-back, a replacement for Wirtz and perhaps a striker. Maybe they will find one such player within Liverpool’s ranks to use as part of what will be a blockbuster transfer.

A Departure to Sign Wirtz?

Still in just his early 20s, Wirtz has enjoyed a sensational rise with Leverkusen. The playmaker was a crucial part of the team that, under Xabi Alonso, captured an unbeaten Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in the 2023/24 season and while Leverkusen have not replicated their silverware total in the campaign just finished, Wirtz had yet another brilliant year.

It is unclear via Plettenberg just which Liverpool players could be included in the deal, but there are a number of names that will most likely be suggested. Darwin Nunez could depart Liverpool this summer and if Leverkusen decide they want a striker, the Reds could perhaps use the Uruguayan in the deal. Also wanting a goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher has been linked with a departure, which could work in Liverpool’s favour.

Given Wirtz’s ability, it is hard to imagine that Liverpool turn their backs on the deal just because Leverkusen want a player included in it. Just who that player ends up being, however, remains to be seen.
