Local music roundup: Best bets for April 8-10
Nubya Garcia will perform at SPACE on Wednesday, April 9. Credit: Mario Coppola
If the red numbers in your 401(k) are making you feel blue, the right thing to do is step away from your computer, leave your home and take in a midweek concert or two. There is still joy and beauty in the world and there is no pain that can’t be lessened by the magic of live music.
Here are my best musical bets for the middle of the week.
Tuesday, April 8
• Irish Music Session, 7 p.m., at Sketchbook Brewing Evanston, 821 Chicago Ave. Traditional Irish music session with a shifting cast of players. Sketchbook owner Shawn Decker usually brings his fiddle and joins in the session. Folks who can play Irish music can join in! If you have never attended an Irish music session, here is a taste of what to expect from 20 years ago at the now-defunct Nevin’s Pub. As you can see, it’s a party. Some of the folks in this video are still in the area and might be at Sketchbook on Tuesday. Free.

• Nubya Garcia, 6:30 p.m., at SPACE, 1245 Chicago Ave. Garcia was born in London to a Guyanese mother and a Trinidadian father. She started playing music as a child at a local community music center, starting out on violin and viola (she played viola in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra). At age 10, Garcia picked up a saxophone, and her focus shifted. Her major influences (Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and Miles Davis) can be heard in her phrasing and tone. Garcia is more than a great tenor saxophonist, and her genre isn’t restricted to the standard jazz segments (bebop, post-bop, avant-garde). This young musician’s Caribbean background comes out in her music. Garcia likes that reggae music! You can also expect to hear classical music influences and R&B flavors in her performances. Garcia is also a talented composer; some of her music has been included in the soundtrack of Apple TV’s Ted Lasso series. The opening act, Montreal-Based Magi Merlin performs music that has an otherworldly aura. She labels herself as an alternative R&B & Neo-soul artist. This show will provide a mid-week boost, and we need uplifting music right now. $29.50.
Thursday, April 10
• Modney, violin, 7:30 p.m. at 8:30 p.m. at Mclintock Choral and Recital Room, Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music, 50 Arts Circle Drive. Modney is one of those musicians that will either delight or horrify you depending on your tolerance for free-form music. He is highly skilled and creative. His music has a lot of what most people would call dissonance. I don’t think you will leave a Modney concert humming one of his melodies. I suspect you won’t be able to identify a traditional melody. Nevertheless, this is interesting stuff, and worthy of attention. Here’s a piece that would work well as part of a horror movie soundtrack. Modney is the violinist and executive director of the New York-based Wet Ink Ensemble and a member of the International Contemporary Ensemble. In this performance, Modney will give the world premieres of compositions by Bienen students Wan Heo, Carlos Zarate, Tanner Carlson-Huber, Wookhyun Kwon and Jack Hamill. Free.
