This spring and summer, the capital is set to resonate with an eclectic mix of music events, from the debut of SXSW London to the unveiling of a unique Grassroots Music Tube Map, reaffirming the city’s status as a global music hub.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched the “London Creates Music” campaign, spotlighting the city’s vibrant grassroots music scene. Central to this initiative is the first-ever Grassroots Music Tube Map, a reimagined version of the iconic transport map, featuring 179 grassroots venues, influential artists, and independent record labels. This map celebrates the venues that have nurtured talents like Charli XCX, Coldplay, and Noah Kahan.
These grassroots venues are not just cultural landmarks but also economic powerhouses, having hosted over 328,000 performances and welcomed more than 4.2 million attendees in the past year, contributing £313 million to London’s economy.
Adding to the city’s musical tapestry, SXSW London is set to make its European debut from 2–7 June in Shoreditch. The festival will feature over 70 music events, including performances by Grammy-winning artist Tems and showcases curated by partners like Abbey Road Studios and BBC Introducing. Venues such as Shoreditch Town Hall and Rich Mix will host a range of genres, from R&B to Caribbean rhythms.
June also marks the arrival of Outbreak Festival in London on the 13th, featuring artists like Turnstile and Danny Brown. Meanwhile, Field Day, scheduled for 24 May in Brockwell Park, faces uncertainty following a High Court ruling that Lambeth Council acted unlawfully in approving the event without proper planning permissions.
The season continues with the Tramlines Festival from 25–27 July in Sheffield, featuring acts like Pulp and Kasabian. Additionally, the Sugababes’ ’25 Tour’ will conclude in Milan on 2 May, after a series of performances across Europe.
As London prepares for this musical surge, the emphasis remains on supporting the grassroots venues that form the bedrock of its rich musical heritage. With initiatives like the Grassroots Music Tube Map and the influx of international festivals, the city is poised to offer a dynamic and inclusive musical experience for all.
