Longford classical music expansion for young musicians with Music Generation

Since its launch five years ago, Music Generation Longford has become a vibrant part of the county’s cultural life, offering young people across Longford access to high quality music education through our after school music hubs: Longford Sounds, Lanesboro Sounds, and Ballinamuck Sounds.

Their hubs provide an inclusive and dynamic space where children and young people can explore a wide range of instruments and musical styles. From rock and pop, including guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, vocals, and our ever popular Bandjam, to the cheerful tones of the ukulele, there is something to suit every interest and ability.

They are especially excited to be expanding the classical music programme at Longford Sounds, which now offers violin, viola, and cello. This addition marks an important step in broadening access to orchestral music for young learners in the area.

For the youngest participants, HUM (Happy Uplifting Music) provides an engaging introduction to music and musical concepts, helping children develop confidence, creativity, and a love for music before progressing to an instrument. Music Generation Longford celebrates student progress through two showcase concerts each year, giving young performers the chance to share their musical journey with family, friends, and the wider community.

The programme is managed by the Longford Music Education Partnership, led by Longford and Westmeath ETB in partnership with Longford County Council, and is part of the national Music Generation initiative, Ireland’s national music education programme.

As they continue to grow, they look forward to welcoming even more young musicians into our community, nurturing talent, building confidence, and making music a part of everyday life in Longford.
