Louis Vuitton has officially stepped into the world of makeup. With beauty legend Pat McGrath at the helm as creative director, the French fashion house’s La Beauté collection has arrived in the form of sleekly-packaged lipsticks, lip balms, and eyeshadows that look like works of art.
Louis Vuitton and vanity have always gone hand-in-hand, with their trunks, which were designed to keep delicate cosmetics, toiletries, and fragrances intact during travel, being part of the Maison’s identity since its inception. Then, as women embraced their femininity and gained a little more independence in the 1920’s, Louis Vuitton brought compact powders, mirrors, and brushes into their offering.

As creative director, Pat McGrath uses her three decades of beauty industry experience to bring us products created with an artist’s perspective. LV Rouge, the line of lipsticks, comes in 55 shades (some a creamy satin, the others a velvety matte, all hand-selected by McGrath) with the aim of encouraging self-expression. Natural waxes from upcycled rose, jasmine, and mimosa flowers, paired with shea butter and hyaluronic acid leave a moisturizing finish behind (read: no cake-y feeling).

LV Baume, the tinted lip balm, is available in 10 shades, all with a sheer, luminous finish, and all guaranteed to leave your lips glowing. And lastly, LV Ombré is a collection of eight eyeshadow palettes, ranging from ultra-matte to ultra-glittery, but all with the aim of completing your look with a little touch glamour. The lipsticks, lip balms, and the eyeshadows all feature the brand’s hero shade, 896 Monogram Rouge, a rich red inspired by the classic brown monogram. At $150 for the lip products and $250 for the eyeshadows, the house is positioning the beauty line firmly in the ultra-ultra luxe category (for context, Chanel lipsticks ring in at $50 and Hermès at $81).
Is Louis Vuitton Beauté the brand’s big break? Only time will tell, but it’s certainly arrived with a bang.
