Lourdes, Century/John Marshall draw No. 3 seeds in boys hockey section playoffs – Post Bulletin

The Rochester Century/John Marshall boys hockey team will enter the postseason with a 19-6-0 record and a four-game winning streak in which it has outscored its opponents by an average of 8.3-1.5.

They’ll also enter the playoffs as the No. 3 seed in Section 1, Class 2A.

The Panthers are the defending section champions.

Seeds were determined on Sunday morning and the Panthers slot in behind the two Lakeville high schools. Lakeville South (16-9-0 overall) is the No. 1 seed, while Lakeville North (12-12-1) is the No. 2 seed.

New Prague is the No. 4 seed, followed by Farmington at No. 5, Owatonna at No. 6 and Rochester Mayo at No. 7.

South is 5-0-0 against section opponents this season and is led by junior forward Carter Ernst (24-30—54) and his brother, senior forward Jackson Ernst (21-30—51). The Cougars’ third-leading scorer is senior forward Oscar Balkins (15-23—38), who was born in Rochester and grew up playing in the Rochester Youth Hockey Association. The Cougars have a first-round bye and will face either New Prague or Farmington in Saturday’s semifinals.

Defending section champ Century/JM is led by senior goalie Kyle Lappi (18-6-0, 2.15 GAA, .918 save pct., 5 shutouts) and junior forward Calvin O’Reilly (29-20—49) and senior Ole Fevold (22-26—48). The Panthers will host a familiar rival, Owatonna, in a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Graham Arena.

Mayo will travel to North for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal on Thursday.

• In Section 1, Class 1A, Lourdes (14-10-1 overall) is the No. 3 seed, behind only defending section champion Northfield (No. 1) and No. 2-seeded Waseca. Lourdes won its regular-season matchup against Waseca, but the Eagles lost to No. 4 seed Albert Lea early in the year, then split two games with No. 5 seed Dodge County (9-15-0).

Northfield, which has won two consecutive section championships, is led by forward Will Cashin (27-29—56) and defensemen Ben Geiger (19-31—50) and Bridger Riley (3-39—42).

Sophomore forward Griffin Storey (19-46—65) leads Waseca, while a balanced Lourdes offense is paced by sophomore Nolan DuBois, who has 17 goals this season.

The rest of the seeds in the 10-team section: Winona is No. 6, Austin No. 7, La Crescent-Hokah No. 8, Red Wing No. 9 and Faribault No. 10.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
