Lusophone films highlighted at IndieLisboa 2025
N In an interview, one of the festival directors, Carlos Ramos, highlighted two Lusophone productions featured in the National Competition: ‘Balane 3’ by Portuguese filmmaker Ico Costa and ‘Hanami’ by Luso-Cape Verdean director Denise Fernandes.
Director Denise Fernandes is making her feature film debut, while Ico Costa returns to the festival with a work filmed in Mozambique.
Lusophone films are spread across different sections, but Carlos Ramos emphasized that Brazilian productions are “always quite present” at the festival.
One of the Brazilian films featured in the IndieMusic category is ‘Milton Bituca Nascimento’ by Flávia Moraes, a tribute to the singer and composer. It follows his farewell tour, which includes stops in Portugal and features testimonies from artists such as Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Carminho, and Maro.
“In this section, there’s an objective to showcase films being made by Lusophone directors about Lusophone musicians, due to the connection with Portugal and Lisbon,” he added.
Among the highlights is ‘Orlando Pantera’ (IndieMusic), a documentary by Catarina Alves Costa, which revisits the legacy of the Cape Verdean musician through archival material and musical reenactments. It presents “contemporary interpretations by artists like Mayra Andrade and Princezito, demonstrating his inspiring influence on today’s musicians.”
In the Rizoma category, aimed at the general public, one of the highlights is ‘O Último Azul’ by Brazilian director Gabriel Mascaro. This recently awarded work addresses aging and social exclusion of the elderly in Brazil.
Also competing in this section is the documentary ‘Nós, Povo das Ilhas’, by Elson Santos and Lara Sousa, which reveals the history, told firsthand, of 31 young Cape Verdeans who, during Portuguese colonialism, went to Cuba for military training with the aim of fighting for the independence of Guinea and Cape Verde.
The films included in the annual program can be selected either by submission or at the discretion of the festival itself. Carlos Ramos mentioned that the selection criteria for the works “are always very subjective.”
This year marks the 22nd edition of the Portuguese film festival in various cinema venues in Lisbon, particularly at Culturgest.
