In 1996, a film was released that became a massive blockbusters and catapulted Karisma Kapoor to superstardom. Initially, 3 actresses refused to do this film, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Juhi Chawla and Manisha Koirala, but despite these challenges, the movie gained immense popularity. We are talking Aamir Khan-starrer Raja Hindustani, which went on to gross Rs 76 crore worldwide at the box office.

Raja Hindustani stands as one of the biggest hits of the 1990s. Directed by Dharmesh Darshan, the film also featured Suresh Oberoi, Archana Puran Singh, Tiku Talsania, Mohnish Behl, Johnny Lever, and Farida Jalal in key roles. Kunal Kemmu also made an appearance as a child actor. The film also grabbed headlines due to kissing scene between Karisma Kapoor and Aamir Khan. Considered as one of the longest kissing scenes in Bollywood, the sequence, as it turns out, was “grueling” to shoot. The scene took three days to complete and after the release it created a significant controversy and sparked conversations about the portrayal of intimacy in Indian films.

Before Karisma Kapoor was cast as the lead in Raja Hindustani, the role was offered to Juhi Chawla and Aishwarya Rai. Juhi turned down the movie due to the kissing scenes with Aamir Khan, as she reportedly had some issues with the actor at the time. Aishwarya, having just won the Miss World 1994 pageant, was unsure about pursuing acting career. Moreover, it was also reported that Pooja Bhatt was offered the role but turned it down due to character demands.

Made in Rs 5.75 crore, Raja Hindustani went on to gross Rs 76.34 crore worldwide and became the highest-grossing film of 1996. The Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor-starrer won five Filmfare Awards for gained widespread attention for its record-selling soundtrack.
