Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala top states for e-car & SUV sales

The Indian electric passenger vehicle industry, which comprises cars, sedans, SUVs and MPVs, is having a good run this year with sales of a record 91,110 units between January 1 and July 31, 2025. This constitutes stellar 60% YoY growth (January-July 2024: 56,930 units) and comprises 91% of the segment’s best-ever annual sales of 99,634 units in CY2024.

The 91,110 electric passenger vehicles sold in the first 7 months of this year are already 91% of CY2024 sales.

The rapid growth trajectory can be gleaned from the seven-month Vahan-sourced data table above, which depicts very high double-digit YoY growth each month. While best-ever monthly retail sales have come in July (15,799 units), sales have surpassed 13,000 units for four months in a row. This performance comes on the back of a clutch of new product launches in the past couple of months.  CLICK HERE for sales stats of 14 electric passenger vehicle manufacturers.

Unless production in the remaining five months of this year is hampered by delayed supplies of rare earth magnets (from China), the Indian e-PV industry should go on to hit a record 150,000-plus units in CY2025. Rare earth magnets are used in a plethora of operations including electric vehicle motors, power steering systems, generator magnets, dashboard displays, and LED lighting systems, among other relevant components in the EV ecosystem.

MAHARASHTRA REMAINS NO. 1 STATE FOR ELECTRIC PASSENGER VEHICLE SALES
The Top 10 states / Union Territories account for 76,449 electric passenger vehicles or 84% of this industry’s retail sales and each has registered very high double-digit YoY growth. The Vahan portal does not provide the retail sales statistics for Telangana state.

Maharashtra maintains its position as the state with the highest demand for zero-emission cars, SUVs and MPVs. Of the 91,110 electric passenger vehicles sold in India in the first seven months of this year, Maharashtra accounts for 15,873 units, which constitutes robust 95% YoY growth (January-July 2024: 8,129 units) and gives it a 17% market share, up from the 14% in the year-ago period. In FY2025, Maharashtra was the No. 1 state for e-two-wheelers, electric cars and SUVs, and also e-CVs

Karnataka is the No. 2 state in India for electric PV sales in the current year with 10,621 units, up 39% YoY. This gives it a 12% e-PV market share, marginally down from the 13% it had a year ago with 7,615 units.

Kerala with 10,148 units and 52% YoY growth (January-July 2024: 6,692 units) is third with a market share of 11%, the same as it had a year ago.

Delhi is ranked fourth with 7,636 units, up 47% YoY, and an 8% market share, down from the 9% share a year ago.

Tamil Nadu has witnessed e-PV deliveries of 7,563 units – this marks a strong 72% YoY increase with an additional 3,131 units and gives it a market share of 8%, up from the 7.78% it had a year ago.

Of all the states and Union territories, Uttar Pradesh has seen the highest rate of growth – 106% – with 6,826 units versus the year-ago 3,321 units.

While Rajasthan (5,497 units) has clocked 59% YoY growth, Gujarat (5,404 units) has registered a 49% YoY increase in demand for electric cars, SUVs and MPVs.

Haryana (3,551 units, up 93%) and West Bengal (3,330 units, up 73%) have also witnessed strong e-PV retail sales and are ranked ninth and 10th respectively.

Of these Top 10 states / UTs, in terms of region-wise retail sales, the southern states (Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu) with a cumulative total of 28,332 units have a 31% share of all-India e-PV retail sales of 91,110 units in January-July 2025, down from the 33% they had in the year ago period.

The northern region (Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana) between them have seen new vehicle registrations of 23,510 e-PVs in the past seven months, gives them a market share of 26 percent.

Maharashtra and Gujarat, which represent the western region, are next with 21,277 units and a 23% share, up from the 20% share they had in January-July 2024. The eastern region is represented by West Bengal with 3,330 units and a 4% share. This leaves a balance of 16% which is split amongst the remaining states and UTs.

Given the growing intensity of the competition in the electric passenger vehicle market, particularly amongst the top three OEMs (Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra), this state-wise EV sales performance data is a key indicator as to just where the consumer demand is emanating from and as to where it is flagging.
