Maharashtra: Over 34 people affected by chemical gas leak in Ambernath | Thane News
Around 34 people from the company and surrounding areas, who complained of breathing problems, have been admitted to Central hospital in Ulhasnagar for treatment.
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) as well as the police team who reached at the spot claimed that the leakage at R K Chemical Company was plugged within an hour by the MIDC’s fire team.
“The sulfuric acid gas leak was reported around 10 am at the factory in Ambernath MIDC and 34 people complaining of breathing problems have been admitted to hospital,” said Santosh Kadam, the chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell of Thane Municipal Corporation.
One fire engine of MIDC was sent to the spot and the situation was brought under control around within an hour.
An activist Satyajit Burman said, “The MPCB, an authority responsible to control such incidents, only issues closure notices and after some days allows such companies to operate resulting in such incidents”.
He said that there is a need to shut such companies playing with the lives of people.
